Hello group, Well, as of yesterday I have been fully sucked into this world of poodles! For the last 14 years I have been owned by my wonderful Standard Eskie pal Mars. However, with thyroid difficulties, declining hearing and sight and recently developed fatty tumors, it was becoming more and more apparant that he is getting closer to his approach to the Rainbow Bridge. So, knowing that that will be an agonizing event for me, I decided it was time to begin looking for the "transition dog" to help me through.
So, since I'd looked at Standard Poodles 14 years ago before falling in love with Eskies, it seemed like the logical place to look again. Yes, I did consider another Eskie. But, since they are such clones of each other I decided that it would be too hard to look into the "same" face again so soon. I began my SP search on Petfinder thinking that perhaps a rescue was the way to go. But, the more I read, the more I decided that it was not the right choice for me - I was not prepared for the health gamble inherent in adopting a rescue with unknown background. I also decided that a pup would be easier for Mars and that perhaps a pup will learn to assist him as he ages.
I talked with LOTS of people and spoke with lots of breeders. Well, if Jasper's first 24 hours with me is any indication - I am thrilled with the choice that I made. He came off the plane yesterday in great spirits and fully prepared to meet strangers and go home with us. He was then subjected to a 4 hour drive home from the airport - hardly a peep out of him the entire time. He learned very quickly that when the car stopped, he got to get out of the box and run around in the grass. So, the only real objection we had out of him was when I stopped for gas and, you guessed it, he didn't get to get out - he let us know that we'd broken the "rules" and that it wasn't really fair! :~) Very sweet.
Mars spent the night with the grandparents and we did introductions this morning - they went splendidly - Mars hasn't hardly given Jasper the time of day! And, Jasper has worked very hard to command his attention with lots of chasing, jumping, barking and biting at him. The cats on the other hand. Well, they are a bit bent out of joint. However, Jasper did learn last night that kitties are different than puppies - they hiss, spit and have very sharp things at the end of their paws that they hit you in the nose with!
Lucky for everyone, it was a glorious fall day here in CNY so we spent much of it outside. There was running around in the backyard chasing Mars and hanging out in the middle of the garage construction project with power saws and hammering that left him essentially unphased. He is flat out on his side zonked and has been for the last 3 1/2 hours! I fear what that will mean for my overnight.
So, that is my story and the tale of my initiation into this wonderful world of SPs! I look forward to the discussions here!
Rebecca

Welcome Rebecca. I'm so glad you discovered standard poodles! They are so much fun! I'm sure you'll not regret it. Glad to hear Jasper is settling in well and hope that Mars soon adores his younger brother.

Well, my mother called this morning to ask if I am sleep deprived yet! :~) I think that somehow Jasper came with a timer installed that goes off every 2 hours. And, since he'd been asleep since 5pm last night...... at 5am this morning he figured it was time to get up and PLAY! I convinced him that that wasn't the best plan and that "mom" needed a couple more hours sleep. So, at 7 I conceded and we curled up together on the living room floor, me with an afghan, he with a chew toy.
He continues to work hard to get Mars' attention - jumping, barking, biting and Mars simply walks away looking at me like "mom, what is this annoying wind up toy that you've brought home and, can you make it go away?!?"
Jasper will be 2 months old tomorrow. He's a lovely, luscious black - quite a contrast with the white of the Eskie coat. I'd be happy to post pics - how do I do that??

Welcome, Rebecca! You'll have to share pictures as soon as you can (check in the photo section for a how-to guide on posting pics...if you still have problems, let me know and I can help). As you may know, I also have an eskie and a poodle...though my poodle is a mini. They are indeed quite a contrast, but also great complements to one another. Though I love eskies, there is something wonderful about poodles too....so much so that I actually agree to some extent with what you say about eskies being a lot more alike with one another. Poodles tend to all be *very* individual. I love both, and find it's about the best combination I could think of. If you haven't already found it, I also have an Eskie Board like this that you can participate in if you want/need to. But we look forward to hearing more stories and seeing more pics of your kids!

Ah, I think Helene had mentioned something about Photobucket making some changes and she had to edit the how-to on the eskie board....we'd just copied her old post over to here to use! We'll have to update that, but in the meantime, look at the post on the EB to get her updated how-to: http://forum.eskie.net/index.php/topic,5166.0.htmlHopefully that will help. Jasper looks great! Looks like he's already getting well spoiled! Can't wait to see pics of them together. You'll have quite a nice contrast with the two of them for sure. Should make a nice pair! Really look forward to hearing more about them as Jasper grows up.
