I mentioned in another thread that I took the clippers to Billy the other day - I took the fluff off his back with a #10 blade. I figured it wasnt protecting him from the sun or cold anyway, I may as well make it easier to put sunscreen on him when I let him out. He loves to lie in the sun and its deadly here so I basically dont let him out much.

I remember reading somewhere long ago that zinc is bad for dogs so I bought some sunscreen which didnt list it in its ingredients. Tons of other stuff I didnt recognise, but no zinc. Does anyone know... is this safe for dogs? Silly me, I DO have some doggie sunscreen somewhere but of course I cant find it now I want it. I always find it in winter.

hi zefi, sorry this has taken so long to reply to (pearl has been in and out of the vets, long and very involved story) anyway. my eldest son was very allergic to just about all sunscreens as a child. I friend was visiting from the US and offered me his sunscreen. it was called aloe-gator apparently especially made for some olympic team sporty thingy... anyway. it was fantastic, so everytime someone went OS i would always request tubes of the stuff... so see if you can michael to track it down for you and post it over.... good luck...

Thanks Carlene. So far the plain one I picked up at the supermarket seems ok and I was told by others it should be fine. Billy is brown as a nut! LOL I'll have to make him some towelling jackets to put on in the warm weather.

Whats wrong with Pearl?? Hope she's ok.

I know this is an old topic, but I wanted to reply in case anyone wanted to keep it in mind for future reference.

I have used baby sunscreen on my hairless Crested before.  I look for any that does not contain lanolin, because cresteds do tend to be allergic.  I know many people who use sunscreen with no problems.  Fred doesnt need it much, because he is black and builds up a tan in the spring.  The lighter colored dogs however burn easily, and it is a must.

Billy is like a little pig - all pink and hairless. Poor boy. (and he's a POODLE!) I usually cover him in a little summer jacket or a towelling cape I've made so he's cool yet protected. I havent tried baby sunscreen but I did look around in the supermarket and I bought a sunscreen which didnt contain zinc and I use that some days. Generally I dont leave him outside much. He loves to sit in the sun and unless he's wearing a jacket I dont like to let him.

Having cresteds, do you find that putting something on their skin, like sunscreen, causes blocked pores or anything like that?

it can, yes.  I dont know how people with light skinned ones manage to keep the skin nice.  Black skin hides blackheads well.. but they stick out like a sore thumb on the pinkies.

Fred only gets some sunscreen if we are going to be out in the sun for a long time, or if we are going to be near water where the sun reflects, expecially if he hasnt built up his tan yet.

When I do use it, its washed off later that evening.  I know they do make sunscreen for dogs too.. I've only seen it available online and thru pet supply catalogues like Drs Foster and Smith.

I have a sunscreen for dogs somewhere... its in a tube but the problem is its quite thick and not easy to spread on little Bill. I prefer to use a more liquid lotion type for his body. The thicker one is made more for light coloured noses and stuff. Well, thats what it feels like its made for.

I do let Billy out in the sun as he loves it, but I always keep the body part covered with a towelling jacket to protect it. His neck and tail/rump area are always exposed and are quite tanned.

I really should update his page with new photos as he's a lot balder now than he was when I wrote about him on my site. I'm due to update the whole site soon so I'll do it then.

I am thinking I have seen a "spray on" type before.. that is meant to be sprayed on the coats..  mostly for dogs with thin and light colored coats.
