This morning Pagan was out in the yard by herself when she started barking an alarm. I went to see what she was barking at (aimed with a long stick and gum boots in case it was a snake) and found an echidna trying to bury itself under one of my new trees.

I quickly rounded her up and into the house and went to get my camera. I almost didnt make it. Soon as the coast was clear the little guy made a run for cover. I could see him scrambling in his rolly polly gait towards the trailer and the wood pile. I got a shot of him as he came out from under the trailer and made for the woodpile. He wouldnt come out again.

What a fascinating guy!  How big are they, Zefi?

Glad it wasn't a snake!   (SHUDDER)

They're only really small. This was a fully grown one, about 10 or 11in long maybe and an oval shape kind of. With the tiniest of faces and long narrow noses. They have tiny eyes but huge claws.

Neat picture, Zefi! They are definitely interesting little characters. I'm glad I got to see that one on the walk one day while I was there. Certainly not something we see around here! Thanks for sharing!
