Hi,
I have two standard poodles, a male Adrian Blue who is five, and a female puppy Zoe who is 6 months old.
My problem and question is this: We only have had her for two months and in that time we have found that the breeders
claim to being house broken were false. That said, we brought out the crate and that helps greatly. However, my husband is home with her during the day and she is a wonderful puppy who knows how to let him know she needs to go out ... that said, when I come she seems to forget all training and just goes when ever ...without any notice or indication that she needed to go out... one of our friends thinks she is battling me for being the alpha female... any thoughts...

Maybe he's just more consistent with her. My Poos do seem to obey my husband better than me. Maybe it has something to do with his voice. When I use a lower voice they respond better!

By six months old she should be well on her way to being trustworthy at least when someone is home but you must remember, dogs dont generalize... she may have been toilet trained at the breeder's home but your home is a totally different story.

I never claim puppies are housetrained when they leave my house - how can they be at 8 or 12 weeks? What I say is that they are already on the way to being house trained because I have already started working on it. When in the house, unless supervised, they are penned with newspapers and they will always use the newspaper to go on so they are paper trained. I take them out frequently to pee on the grass so they learn to go outside as soon as they wake up or when I let them out after playing. The thing with puppies is they need to go often - after any nap, after every meal and after any play session. I'd say that a young pup needs to go out every 20min when its playing - even if it doesnt need to go then, it probably will so you avoid accidents.

I agree that your husband is probably more consistent or perhaps commands more respect. I have only known my boyfriend for 1.5 years and he's only lived here for about 8 months but my dogs all listen to him much more than they listen to me. (shameful isnt it?  Big Grin) When there's a commotion, unexpected 'reasons for barking' etc sometimes they will just not listen to me, and I've found that I have to ask him to intervene... they listen to him and I'm sure it has something to do with 1. his deeper more commanding voice and 2. the fact that although he plays with them way more than me, he also never treats them as anything more than dogs and thus somehow maintains a kind of superiority which it seems I (since I love them as if they are family) lack.  Roll Eyes

Also, girls do tend to bond way more with the men in the family... and she may be competing to be the special girl in his life... I know that Pagan seems to think Greg's her man...  Tongue 2

Try going back to basics and taking her out at regular intervals regardless of whether she should be able to let you know by now. Life is hard with young dogs. I always feel like I'm taking them out every half hour, every 2nd ad break while watching TV, etc. Also, I found that by rewarding them for going outside I can get them to go more promptly and more consistently. I started this with the toy boys years ago. Say 'go pee' just as they started to pee, then 'good boy!' and then a treat as soon as they'd finished. Soon I was able to say 'go pee' and they would pee and run back for a treat.

Good luck. Do you have pics of Adrian and Zoe?

Oden did great when we got him home. We were shocked to say the least, at how fast he got the hang of house breaking. That said. He just came though a ( I hate to say it ) spiteful faze, at about 6months Mad If he wasn't getting something he wanted, he would look right at me or Jeff, and pee! And he could have just came in. Zeus ( our greyhound ) had recently come to live with us, but he had been here a little while. So I'd say either she's competeing with you, or for you; or she's trying to see what you will let her get away with.  ( this is puppy teenager stage) Evil I finnally broke down, and went against everything I've read, and when he did that right in front of me, I did the "old school" thing and rubbed his nose in it and yelled "NO!" after the second time of that he stopped. They are scary smart, and she'll learn quick. I know I sound awful, but belive me I am the softy, and the Little Prince knows it too Big Grin Now we go out 2 to three times in the evening (before dinner, acouple hours after / before bed )
