We have two male toy poodles, aged 10 and 11 and really want to take them with us on an 8 hour drive from Sydney to our property on the north coast, stopping for regular toilet breaks etc.  They have both been on several short car rides with us, eg. no more than an hour and always bark and carry on the whole way nearly deafening us.   Roll Eyes

What do you recommend we take and do to keep the poodles calm?  Any advice would be appreciated.   Confused

Do you crate them for short car rides?  Or let them loose in the car?  If they are normally loose, you might want to try a crate.

The car is a Subaru Forrester which has an open boot directly behind the back seat.  They ride there and are tied up loosely by their leads so they still have plenty of movement.

I put my female Crested in a crate when we go byes.  If she is loose in the car she fusses, whines, paces, and throws up.

She is alot calmer in the crate.  She does occasionally throw up, but not like she does if she's loose!

You could also try DAP spray..  dog appeasing pheremones.. to help calm them.  I have heard alot of good things with Bach's Recue Remedy to help calm dogs.

I have friends who have this problem, and nothing worked, finally even though they did not want to have to do it, they had thier vet perscribe a seditive. Hope your able to come up with something better, but if not at least there's that. Good luck.  Happy

One of the poodles is very attached to my husband and I think most of the fuss when we're driving is about him wanting to be with my husband as he can see him in the driver's seat.  What would a sedative do .. make them sleep?  I am a bit nervous about sedating them as they are not young dogs.

Ya that's pretty much it, that's why I said it should be a last resort, they hate useing it too, but they sometime bring the dogs with them camping, and it's a 4hour drive, and Bruce (a shepaed mix) starts barking in the driveway, and really does not stop until they pull in. Talk about having a headache.

I would try some DAP or rescue remedy before resorting to medications.  Take a few short car rides before the trip and see if any of those will work.  Drugs are an absolute last resort.

I'm sure you will figure out something that works best.

Do you play music in the car?  That helps keep mine calm too.  Fred likes anything but rap and hard rock LOL.  There's a few times we fought about what to listen to because he does like country.. and I dont LOL.

We usually have to play music just to drown out the noise of the dogs barking and yelping. Wink

LOL gotcha LOL  Mine do enjoy the music.  Fred will fuss if I dont play music!  LOL

Fred used to ride on a big rig with me and my ex hubby..  he would always have music and/or the CB going, so Fred is used to noise when we ride.

you can give Valerian... its a herbal based valium.. so it will just relax him, not necessarily make him sleep..

this is readily available at any healthfood shop... you could also try bella donna herbal drops.. I use this when i need to clip epileptic dogs..

good luck

I agree with the others... A crate is a good and safe way. And valerian or melatonin. I wouldnt give a sedative and havent heard of DAP (it may be unavailable in Australia anyway). Melatonin is how I got Pagan over her fear of thunderstorms. You can get it at the chemist or healthfood shop. Its a natural product - our bodies produce melatonin at dusk to make us sleepy so we can go to bed. Apparently giving a dog melatonin to calm it down also has a kind of teaching effect where it produces a calmness that teaches it to not worry about whatever it is thats the problem. You'd have to look at the dosages on the back and work out what to give a toy but at worst it'd make them groggy or sleepy.

So when you say crate them do you mean put them in a cage?   Confused
