My dog will not poop if he has his harness on. Even if it is very loose he will not. I had a bunch of messes in my house a few days ago. I went to a collar and he has been perfect sense then. He doesn't walk perfect on it, but I use a retractable lead so his neck doesn't get jerked. I only use a retractable lead and collar when he goes to the bathroom. For walks I use a harness and a short lead.

That is exactly what we need to do too. It does work out well though, while this is not fool proof, when we don't want him to poop during a walk (like a pleasure walk though town, or down the boardwalk) we use the training harness (the pull-stop type) it also gives us better control; but for "business" walks we use the retractable.
