I am showing my new poodle puppy. I have a variety of collars and leashes to use, but not happy with any of them. They either hurt my hand, I dont feel secure with them ( can't control him or worried they will break), they get caught in the coat, or don't fit properly and he can back out of them
Any suggestions for what people have found to be the best?- materials, design, size etc

I’ve tried all kinds of collars – I love collars that buckle so you can slip them on and off easily but in a standard they get too big and bulky. I have a great one that I used to show Billy with – a very thin rolled leather in a light tan that was almost silver beige. Perfect.

With Pagan and Montana the combination I used most was a snake chain and a parachute cord lead. I bought a snake chain that would fit around her neck as a collar, not as a chain, and I bought a parachute cord that has 2 loops (a large one for your hand and a tiny one that you can loop and tie onto the collar). These are usually used with little clips…  called trogan clips, but if you do it my way you end up with a very secure, strong, non-choker collar that doesn't slip through your fingers when you stack your dog as chokers do.

Here is a link to the leads and clips, and later I’ll do an illustration of the way I tie it if you want.

on this page you’ll find the leads 13th down from the top.

Hello Zefi

Not sure if I understood the para lead and the clips, it sounds like snake chains are the best for showing with a lead.
Is that also the preferred collar for a puppy been shown. Sorry I am very new, I would also love to see a video on how to stack a poodle as I do not know how. Something tells me we will be very entertaining in the ring, oh dear.LOL

I also use a snake chain as a collar,( not as a chain. )
I use a Ring5 product, the "extra fine."
with a thin black lead (with a black dog ofcourse)

this we also use in showing puppies.

you can see at the westminister dog show page, and click on the poodle video's and look how they stack their poodles.
or you can look at showpictures when the dog is stacked, and try to copy that with your dog,
teach the puppy to let you place his feet, and you'll be ok in the ring!
tell the secretary that it's your first time, then they will explain you the things you dont understand.
It's not brainsurgery Wink

Oh great... show training. Something I am beginning YET again... and I feel like I've forgotten everything I ever knew when I have a bounding bouncing black ball of fluff who wont keep for feet on the ground or pokes his head to sniff the ground! sigh....

I've often seen people use thin black leather collars to show with and I like the idea of a collar which you can buckle too put on and take off. However its hard to get one strong enough to hold a standard poodle yet thin enough to show in.

Quoll you should give me a call and I'll help with show training and coat care etc.

I was thinking of doing that. I have a 14 inch jewellers link chain and a three foot thin leather lead. The nylon ones hurt my hands. The 14 inches just goes around Idjit's neck, so I will clip both loops through one clip and lead
