I never knew!
i've raised litters of poodle pups before..actually three litters in the past 30 years..
But I am way behind the curve on poodle pup colors...
the other two litters were from light colored dogs so there was NO BLACK AT ALL.
But this time I bred my Standards, My cream dog(that has black, white, and red in its background) to my black bitch (that also has red brown, black ,and white in her background)

Well She had 8 healthy Black pups last week...well mainly Black...
And boy am I confused ..you see...the pups have some "variety' to them....
some are not "black black" but have a brown tinge..are these gonna be brown or just a dirty black?
 and some have white chins
and some have white toenails and a little white on the bottom of their paws
and some have a spot of white on their chests.
i've read a little in the last couple of days about the hair on the paw pads being a way to tell the eventual color of the poodles..and how browns are often born black..and how white chins mean that the dog will go gray or silver ...
but I am flummoxed if I can tell what thye are going to be...except healthy.

yes of course their could be a parti color in the background somewhere...but not in a direct line to these two. they are bot from a fairly strong show line and I have the pedigree back 8 generations on the bitch and 4 on the dog.

Sorry I just saw this thread today. I have no idea about the genetics of colour, but it seems to me that you have some very unusual pups there! LOL

Can you take photos? How old are they now?

You're right in that white hairs under the pads *usually* mean a different colour at adulthood but that may not be the case all the time. In silvers they're born black but have white under their pads indicating they will be silver. However I've seen white hair under the pads of my black pups and they're all still black!

I think whats most likely is that there are a lot of colours in the background behind your two and that there may be other recessive genes that have been expressed...

For example, the white spots on the chest or toes are simply the mismark gene which is often carried and hidden. In your case both parents carried it and it showed up in the pups. I've never heard of a white chin meaning silver.

The brown cast to the coat could mean the pups may be blue... but I dont know. Usually all pups are born black and fade out to bad black or blue or whatever as they grow. I've never heard of a black pup that wasnt pure shiny black at birth. Have you looked close? is the hair follicle one colour or more than one colour? Could they be brindles?

I am no expert in colours though. Send us some photos and we'll see if we can find out.

Loading pics is a matter of uploading them to somewhere and then simply linking to them from here... I'm not sure how to explain it better. Michael and Mary are the experts... But if you have a website or somewhere you can upload pics like a photo sharing thing, you can link to the pics here and they'll show up providing you use the 'insert pic' button - when you're in the text box where you type your message there is a line of type properties first below the subject and message icon, then there's a line of various other button. First in that line is the 'insert image' icon. If you put in a link to a photo and highlight it, then click that button it will put the pic in where the link is.

Hi Luke - Check the photo section for a topic at the top on how to post pictures. If you just need to post links in the post, we can click on them from there....that works as well if it's better for you. Or you can send pics to either Zefi or myself via email and we can post them for you. Just let us know if you need any more help with pictures. Thanks...

Hmmm to me you just have a true mix match of colors in both pedigrees and combined have produced simply mismarks and maybe blues or bad blacks. The brownish tinges - until you can post the differance, they may be browns but what I can see on most litters is that you can tell them apart.  They are not partis.

sorry, I do not agree at all - at any age Poodle puppies are, they are worth taking photos of.
