Here's a question for you folks....hope someone has an answer to this one! Has anyone heard of any Standard Poodles competing in Schutzhund??? I read about it in an old Poodle breed book. They are definitely smart enough to learn it.Is there anyone who has done that recently? And what do you think about such training for a Poodle?

Schuzhund is the German word meaning "protection dog". It is a dog sport that usually features German Shepherds,Rottweilers, and Belgian Malinois trained in three different areas: Tracking(objects/people) Obedience and Protection. However, any dog with a suitable temperament can be trained in Schutzhund;I saw a video on You Tube where a Jack Russell Terrier was trained in Schutzhund. It was pretty cool.

Would be nice to see more details on this with Poodles! An uncle of mine is a police officer and he had the K9 unit for a number of years (recently he told me he couldn't do it again as it was too hard losing a dog once....dog died of something else, not on duty). Anyway, I remember him telling me, and reading on K9s as well, that one of the biggest advantages of K9s is that criminals or suspects will think they can *fool* an officer....essentially trying to be *smarter* than the cop is. But they often drop their weapon or throw their hands up when they see the dog is ready to nail them.....as they know they can't "outwit" the dog....and that the dog is trained to *attack* at a moment's notice! And they can't outrun the dog easily either, of course! He also mentioned that the little red lasers on their guns, that when they sight them in on a suspect and the person realizes the laser is showing on their chest, that it's amazing how fast they drop their weapon or raise their hands up and surrender. They know they're on target and no way to get out.
My point...dogs in particular are an amazing defense tool. And though we'd expect a GSD or Doberman or Rottweiler to be killer trained, it'd blow someone away if a poodle were the guard dog! Most people are not aware how big the Standards can get and if they entered a house or other place and found this guard poodle the size of....holy ##$@@ and they'd probably just run from shock, let alone having to clean their pants later! Poodles definitely have the smarts to do the job.....and a standard could definitely hold its own in this regard! I hope we see more of this......it sounds interesting! Keep us posted!

My Tia is a wonderful guard dog given I live alone. A lot of people have said they can't believe how intimidating she can be as she roars at intruders till they slow down & are acknowledged. Once she knows I am aware they are around & they have been greeted she becomes the affectionate dog they all know & like if not love.
