We tried Billy at a second show on Friday. It became quite obvious that Billy simply doesn't have any desire to show so we are not going to pursue a show career for him. Although the judge and handler felt he had what it takes to finish, we simply can't get the one thing form him he needs; which is the poodly attitude. He just a handsome, nice, laid-back guy and that's fine with us. And, knowing that the judge and handler believed he had the qualities to finish is a great thing to know.

Since he won't be showing anymore, I cut him into continental yesterday. Mostly it is roughed in. I still need to cut the jacket about a half inch or so shorter in the back.

How about those clothes I'm wearing. Had some horse work to do and was wearing my muckers and crap clothes. LOL

Billy is looking gorgeous. Love his face, what an expression! Why the continental if you wont be showing him?

I want to see what Billy looks like in full continental and I would also like to have photos of him like that for our web site when we create it.  He is so handsome, I wish he would carry himself as if he knew it.

You know, it's a funny thing...Billy will run poodly beside me if he is of leash and no collar.  As soon as he is put into collar, he trots around like he is being forced to do something he doesn't want to do.  I just read a post on another forum I am a member of where a young girl has a beautiful red, same age as Billy, and she just posted that he is doing the same thing.  He does the lovely bouncy gait with head up off-leash but doesn't carry his head up if she puts him on-leash.  Have you ever heard of that before?

yeah i think its a "poodle syndrome" haha ! =)

hmm, have you tried to use a ehrr, whats it called, a harness?

does he carry himself the same when using that? if not you can train with that, and lay in a command, and then after he gets what is expected from him, you can go ower to the leash again?

I have got some tip from a handler in the USA wich handle's the afghans ( not an easy breed to show when beeing like billy!! Tongue )

- try to have the leash in the other side of the head ( its strange to the dog, if he's not used to it)
- try to have the leash all loose in the bottom of the neck
- try to have the leash right under the ears
- use a FANTASTIC Treat, but be careful that you give him the treat WHEN the head is in the position you'd like it to be, not when he's on his way to lower it.
- use a snake chain, be careful that you use it right, (that the chain does open again after having it tight) then you can carefully "snap" the leash to get the head up, and the chain will unloose again, instead of choking the dog Wink

this is the tips i saw here giving to the afghan owners, i got to use some of them myself, because my little champ, didnt wanna go in the ring with his head up, just like billy, and all the sudden he walked like a prince  Big Grin

sorry for the bad language, I'm a bit tierd Tongue:P:P  Confused

Thank you for that information!  My sister and I were racking our brains trying to come up with some kind of device that would force him to gait with his head up while in the ring.  We found that if I hold his head up by putting my hand under his chin, he gaits beautifully with the proper push off and head up position.  But as soon as I let go, he goes right back to the head down position.

He is just beautiful to look at and a judge and handler felt he could finish but we have been stumped as to how to get him to carry himself properly.
