has anyone experienced a strained hammie in a puppy... I have just been babysitting a 25 weeks old standard and he has pulled his pecta... blah blah muscle, basically the muscle that keeps his leg in his hip socket... poor baby can hardly walk. vet says just rest, gave him an anti-inflammatory injection. He has slept most of the afternoon, we went on a very leisurely stroll to the end of the street and back (the whole time he was pulling on his gentle leader) .... now this is a test for a 25 weeker! How long does it take for him to be back to his bouncing self.....

Poor baby!  I would think that it would help to massage him.  We've done that when our pups have hurt themselves before.

I've never had experience with that Carlene, but Pagan once pulled a front leg muscle. I let her out one morning, she ran out and leapt off the porch and next minute I heard a soft whining. I went out and she was sitting there looking miserable. She must have spread eagled herself on the wet grass. She was limping very badly and in a short time her chest had swollen up hugely, like she'd had a breast implant! Honestly, it was a round bubble of fluid. I took her to the vet and they had to cut her open and put in a drain. It didnt take long for her to get back on her feet without limping but it took a while for the hair to grow back so I could show her!

update... he went for a very leisurely stroll this morning to the end of the street and back, pulled on his gentle leader all the way.... my naturopath suggested the vinegar and brown paper treatment, which seems to have helped him. we are doing it three times today and tomorrow... i can still feel the tensioned muscle, but it is definately not as tight as yesterday....

poor little guy, all he wants to do is run and run and run with harry.....

That's good, Carlene! Always like when they start mending from nasty things. Could you explain the vinegar and brown paper treatment for us? I am sure I could find out looking around, but have not heard of it before, and gather others could learn from it as well. Thanks! Keep us updated.

as soon as i told my naturopath about the strained muscles, she instantly started reciting the Jack n Jill nursery rhyme... which ended in "and wrapped it in vinegar and brown paper". you can image the look on my face.....
You simply just soak brown paper in a saucepan of heated vinegar, (as hot as you can handle it) and apply it to the area. with this I just lay him on his back and place the vinegar soaked paper in his groan, he actually likes it, but am rubbing under his neck and telling him what a good boy he is.... anyway it basically works like and hot and cold compress in one, except the poor baby smells like vinegar and I feel like I need to be eating hot chips.....

This is a great treatment to know!  Thanks for explaining it.  I'm so glad to hear he's feeling better. Smile
