Oh Helen!  That's horrible!  Funny.... but horrible!  I was talking about the poodles to one of the people I commute with about a month or so again and they got very excited and asked if we were going to "branch out" and make goldendoodles because she had just seen something about them on TV and she knows that "MOST breeders do both"  Oh my god I almost choked to death trying not to laugh out loud and then I very nicely told her that I didn't believe in mixing the breeds or any breed really.  She very innocently asked "Why not?  You'd make more money"............... at which point I walked away so I was not forced to bang my head against a wall.

just have to add yet another two cents worth...

i had customer bring in her prized labradoodle for a clip
after listening far too long to her gushing over her exquisite specimen of the breed, and how she had to wait two years for the labradoodle manor in victoria for the colour of her baby, blah blah blah,

i politely asked its owner, "what exactly did she expect in a clip" for her dog...
her answer was, "your the groomer just clip him like a labradoodle"

well as everyone here knows this is one of my bug bears... the whole labadoodle issue...

so i walked over to the table where we keep a copies of BARK, Pets & Vets, Dogs Life, photo albums of customers dogs with comments and we have a book with every registered breed in it, with basic clipping information and guidelines on each breed....

so as i am flicking over page after page after page, i asked the customer again,
"what was the breed of your dog again", she answered "labradoodle".... so i went to the "L section"
went through every breed in the L section, then had to inform this woman, that infact she did not own a dog that was listed" she was quite bewildered, went through the pages herself...

so by know im just bursting with excitement, i just had to inform her that the dog she paid $2400 for was not a registered breed, she was quick to add that the breeder was infact registered....

so basically i told her that she would need to trust me with what i could or couldnt do with the type of coat he had, as these "designer mongrels" dont come with a book of instructions, its basically a lucky dip....

when she returned to pick up her baby, she was happy with the clip, as he was shedding all over her furniture, carpets and her car,  but she had bought with her the registration papers for me to view, (she obviously was still in hope that they meant something).
Her labradoodle was breed from a Registered Labradoodle Breeder that was registered with the Labradoodle Association of Australia... yes they even have a website...

Thats just idiotic. Stupid woman. The shedding didnt give her any indication at all that she'd been taken for a ride? sheesh.

As for the trims, I was thinking (when you mentioned BARK magazine) that you were going to bring out photos of labradoodles in all their glorious muttly splendour, each different, all messy looking, and say 'now what trim would you prefer?' LOL

When BARK first came out they sent me a copy of the magazine and asked if I would like to advertise in it (I presume they collected breeders names from somewhere and sent them out) and I replied that No, thanks, there was no way I would advertise my dogs in a magazine which might place an article about labradoodles opposite my ad. That silenced her!

I don't know how many people have seen this yet but it just adds to the frustration of the Labradoodle boom.  For those familiar with the family board game Monopoly.....  Every once in awhile they will release a special edition that will have to do with something happening at the time.  They's come out with a New and Modern edition..... the car game piece is a hybrid and the dog is a labradoodle.................. sigh

Move over, Rover: Hybrid labradoodle replaces Scottish terrier token

The Scottish terrier has always been among the most popular Monopoly game tokens, according to Matt Collins, vice president of marketing for Hasbro Games. So there was no doubt a dog would be among the icons for the special edition Monopoly: Here & Now.
"In research over the years, the dog was one of the most heartfelt tokens," Collins says.

A labradoodle got the nod as representative of the growing number of hybrid dogs. A cross between a Labrador retriever and poodle, the labradoodle has recently become popular in the USA after first being bred in Australia as a guide dog.

Tiger Woods is among those owning a labradoodle. Woods got a puppy after winning the PGA Championship last month. The puppy, named Yogi, joined Taz, a border collie, in the Woods' household in Florida.

Writing about the dogs in his website newsletter, Woods said, "They'll definitely keep us on our toes."

Labradoodles are very intelligent, easy to train and are very sociable, says Ken Fischer, general manager of the Australian Labradoodle Association of America.

"They can open doors, even sliding doors, pop open baby gates ... having that poodle in them means they use their front paws like hands," Fischer says.

The cost of a labradoodle ranges from $2,000 to $3,000. Part of the dog's popularity stems from its appeal to allergy sufferers because its curly coat is less prone to shedding.

Says Fischer: "We bought the dogs because they weren't well known. For whatever reason, they've become extremely popular and are everywhere, and I'm not sure that is always a good thing."

Fischer, who lives in Cincinnati, has four labradoodles and also runs a dog rescue website.

There's something very disturbing about that.  Especially because now every small child who is growing up with this new version will think of THAT as the Monopoly dog.  At least it's a limited edition.  Check out the price range they claim these new and exciting dogs are worth....

I'm at a loss for words as well...sheesh! You'd think that someone would just ask...."well, what IS a labradoodle, anyway?"....because the answers vary so much that you can't really define what they are...other than a mixed breed (aka mutt)! Something to remember- a mutt by any other name is a still a mutt! Sure, any dog will keep you on your toes...mutt or purebred....that's just reality. Oh well....those of us who understand the value of purebreds have to keep telling people the truth when we can.

I guess labradoodles are the big thing right now.   Remember when everyone was all into Cockapoos?  I certainly do.

It's kind of neat that my hubby's therapy business is here in our home.  All of our patients get exposed to our poodles and we have a constant opportunity to show them off and educate them all about how wonderful poodles are.  We have many patients who HAVE to say hello to all the pups when they arrive and before they leave.  Our Tuesday evening lady, the last one of the day.. she just loves them all so much.  So when it's time for her to leave, we let them all free and she crouches down and gets covered in poodle kisses before she leaves.  Some patients bring them treats (altho I'm not shy about telling people exactly what kinds of treats I allow the dogs) and at Christmas it's certain that they will get lots of giant christmas chewies.  Pretty nice!
